Informed decision-making is key when it comes to potential buyers or tenants considering a building’s energy performance. That’s why the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rollout in South Africa is set to revolutionize energy efficiency. The first crucial step in reducing energy consumption is understanding energy consumption itself.

Obtaining Energy Performance Certificates in South Africa

To obtain an Energy Performance Certificate, building owners must gather essential building information, including a year’s worth of electricity consumption data, net floor area, details on excluded areas, and vacancy rates. This information must then be audited by a South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) accredited inspection body (IB). The IB submits the energy performance value to the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), which adds it to the National Building Energy Performance Register. A unique EPC number is generated and sent to the SANAS accredited IB, who can then issue the EPC for a display to the client.

The National Building Energy Performance Register will not only facilitate future benchmarking of building energy consumption but also track progress toward achieving the targets outlined in upcoming EPC regulations.

Empowering Energy Monitoring and Efficiency in South Africa

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) play a vital role in monitoring systems and collecting data to guide building management and consumption decisions. In the context of South Africa, where over 77% of electricity is generated from coal and the prevalence of load shedding, understanding our buildings’ energy usage has become increasingly critical.

EPCs provide a roadmap for identifying areas where consumption can be improved, enabling informed decisions and promoting energy efficiency. By gaining insights into energy usage patterns, building owners and managers can make informed choices to optimize consumption and address occupant behavior.

Given the current energy challenges faced by South Africa, including the heavy reliance on coal, EPCs offer a valuable tool to assess and improve energy performance. They provide essential information that can guide strategies to reduce energy consumption, mitigate the impact of load shedding, and work towards a more sustainable energy future.
